Excited to see you have a title for the third book! As much as me and my book club are looking forward to it, we’ll wait patiently (so many books to read, so little time to read them). Thanks for the update.
All i i wanted to do was read OTWw again. Then I saw that there eas a sequel listed in the book. After reading Vengeance, I thought how rude to leave me on the “cliff”. I cannot wait for the continuation of the story. For bitter or for sweet.
Haha, as I told Jackie, I wasn’t certain of Molly’s fate either. I had to write the third book to find out!
Just finished Vengeance and 1000 WW. I am already missing these characters as I would miss dear friends. Fabulous writing – so engaging! I was so drawn to the history through reading your books. I keep Googling tribes, battles and locations to learn more. Thank you.
Please hurry with #3!
Jim, I along with 10 of my friends, that I have known for over 50 years have a book club. One of the ladies picked your book One Thousand White Women for us to read and discuss. Well when we met the next month “Oh My Gosh” I never heard anything like it! They loved it and couldn’t stop talking about it. We were so sad for the book to end! We didn’t want the book to end. They all argued and argued that the book was fact not fiction. I had already purchased the second book and when they found out there was a sequel the cheers went up. We just had our monthly meeting tonight and they were so excited that you are working on a third book. I want to thank you for being such a good writer. You have a gift ,, You truly do! Many thanks for brightening the lives of a bunch of 65 year old ladies!
Hi Carol, being 69 myself, I’m delighted to hear that a bunch of my women peers have been enjoying my books. I believe that you are the heart of my demographic, although, now that OTWW has sold over a million copies in the past 20 years, and still going strong, that demographic has broadened. I just finished the third book, and it won’t be published until next year. Many thanks for you kind words about my work.
Hi Jim, I am a 71 year-old French lady ,I have just been offered you first two books in the French version, I know the 3rd volume has just been published in French, but one question: isn’t it strange the original version, in English, will be published AFTER the translation???
I am longing to reading it, please let us know when we can buy it!!
Salut Annie! Yes, it is a bit unusual that the French translation was published before the American edition, but that has been the case with several of my books. The French can get a book out much faster than the average American publisher and I wanted to publish there in 2019. I work very closely with my French translator and he translates directly from my English manuscript. I had some editing to do for my American editor, which I have been slow delivering, so I don’t yet have a firm pub date. But I should shortly, and as soon as I do, I’ll post the date on the site.
Is there any update you can share with us about “Strongheart”. Any date when it will be available in the US?
Hi Jim. My name is Cynthia Hefner. Just read One Thousan White Women for the second time! I can’t seem to put it down. I feel a kindred spirit with May. I keep going back to this book, because it transports me to the mountains, under a starlit canopy and along a crystal stream! I want to be there; this book takes me there!
Hi Cynthia. I’ve been hopeless as usual in keeping up with my blog, but I’m happy to hear from you. I just finished final revisions on the manuscript of Strongheart, which will be published in France this September, with the title, Les Amazones, but won’t be published in the U.S. until next year. It’s also gratifying to know that a reader feels transported by my book, and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me that.
Hi!! Thank God I speak French! I can’t wait to read the third book, I am so excited about it!Are you planning some meetings with your French readers this year? Greetings from France
Hello Monika, yes I’ll be making a book tour in France September/October/November, as well as attending three weekend book festivals. Maybe I’ll see you on the road.
My friend and I recently listened to “”One Thousand White Women” while driving to and fromCalifornia to Washington State. We got part way through “The Vengeance of Mother’s” so we are both listening to it on our own iPads. Love both books and can’t wait for your third. Keep up the great writing. You’re only 69 years YOUNG, i’m 73 years YOUNG!
Hey Niki, well yes, we’re not out of the game yet! The actress who presents both of those novels in the audiobook edition does a beautiful job, and I’m glad you and your friend got to “read” them that way. Many thanks for your post.
I am enthralled by how the painted descriptions come alive in my imagination. I’ve fallen in love with all the characters and can not wait for the third book to reveal the next adventure you take me on. A part of me wishes to have been living on the plains in a more basic time with nature. Thank you.
Thanks Jennifer. Those images are constantly in my mind as I write, and it’s a luxury for me to escape into that world. Like Shawn, I miss my characters when I finish a book, and maybe that’s why I keep returning to them. As to living on the plains with nature, that notion was what first attracted me as a child to the Indian way of life. It seemed so romantic, though the reality was frequently brutally hard… especially in the era dealt with in my books. Yet I still harbor the romance of it, and I’m happy that a little of that is passed on to readers like you.
I just bought a copy of 1000 White Women at a rummage sale at my church. I couldn’t put it down! I was so sad to finish it, so I came to this web site to learn more about Jim Fergus. I am thrilled to find that this book is the first in a trilogy. I’m going to order The Vengeance of Mothers as soon as I navigate this web site!! Love, love, love the way you write, Mr. Fergus.
That’s very kind of you Mary Lynn, and I hope you also enjoyed The Vengeance of Mothers. Stay tuned for the third book of the trilogy.
Just finished the morhers vengeance,it would be marvelous if you wrote a book about hawks life and experience
Thankyou have read all your books and find them passionate
Hey Robert, I don’t get many posts from men on my site… in fact, hardly ever. So I appreciate hearing from you. As to Hawk, I’ll give some thought to that.
I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying my books. Thank you.
I am new to your writing, and already a huge admirer. Anticipating Strongheart, whenever it is published.
Hi Pam, I always enjoy hearing from new readers, especially satisfied ones. Many thanks for taking the time to post your message.
I so appreciate the truths of history you share in your books. They bring about great discussion in our book club. Thank you for sharing your interest and gifts with us.
Thank you, Faie, I very much appreciate hearing that your book club has lively discussions about my books!
Oh my … I’m so happy to know you aren’t leaving us hanging. I have absolutely loved these 2 books and can’t wait for more. I’m so looking forward to this next chapter. Thank you for all the unforgettable characters!
Hello Jan…no, I will not leave you hanging. The next chapter is underway. Thank you for your kind words.
Hello Jim, I just started reading this most amazing book one thousand white women. I travel back and forth from Germany to the States trying to find out what it was like during that time and where we are now. And your book brings me right into that time. I have to continue reading now… just had to find out a little bit about you the author before I continue. Thank you so much. Best wishes Judit
Hello Judit, I’m happy to know that you’re enjoying OTWW. If it pleases you, and while it is still fresh in your mind, I recommend that you have a look at the second volume of the trilogy, THE VENGEANCE OF MOTHERS. Many thanks for visiting my website and for taking the time to post a message. All best, Jim
Mr Fergus your books are amazing! And I just finished The Vengeance of Mothers tonight! And Am thrilled to find its a trilogy! Can’t wait! Thank you!
Hello Beth. Thank you! I’m very pleased to know that you’ve enjoyed the first two novels of the trilogy. The third is not too far away.
I appreciate that you took the time to post on my blog. Jim
Just wanted u to know that our book club loved the first two books of the trilogy and can’t wait for the third. You have such a great gift for writing. Keep it up. A satisfied fan.
Thanks so much for letting me know that. Perhaps because the process of writing novels is such a solitary, internal process, it is sometimes hard for writers even to imagine that anyone reads their books, let alone appreciates them. So it’s always gratifying to hear. Thank you!
This is Lea’s Friend, Carol Morgan. I have just devoured Vengance and can’t wait for Strongheart!!
Hope all is well. Au revoir
Glad to hear it. And thanks for getting in touch!
A friend of mine suggested reading your 1st book 1 thousand White Women, I couldn’t put it down! In fact while reading that one, I went & ordered the 2nd book, and loved it even more, when I got to the last page, I wanted to read more! So I can’t wait for the 3rd book! My friend and I are avid book readers, its our addiction! And I am so glad she introduced me to your books!
Hi Joyce, thank you for your kind post, and thanks to your friend who introduced you to my books. I’m very pleased to know that you enjoyed them, and particularly to hear that you liked Vengeance even more than 1000WW. Sequels are often tricky territory for writers, and for readers, but I like the 2nd more, too. Stay tuned for #3.
Have read both novels. Knowing the outcome from a historical perspective I know you will leave your readers with an appreciation of the indomitable spirit of the People. Thank you for that.
Thank you for reading my books, and for own appreciation of the indomitability of the people… against impossible odds. Stay tuned for the third book.
Hi, Jim, Just finishing the Vengeance of Mothers, which our book club will be discussing tomorrow. Back in your days in Tubac we were so pleased to be able to have you at our discussion and buy your lunch at the Longhorn in Amado. Seeing that you are north in the summer (wise man as it is 104 plus at 2pm) we won’t be able to throw questions at you this time. Thanks so much for continuing to write!
Hi Nancy, yes, of course, I remember your group and lunch at the Longhorn. That was a while ago! Sorry I’ll miss your book club meeting but happy to answer any questions that come up. Thanks for posting your message!
Cher Monsieur Fergus,
Jim, do you have a date yet that your 3rd book Strongheart will be published in the US? Our book club can’t wait to get our hands on it.
Hello Carol. As mentioned in a previous post, I should have a firm pub date shortly and will post it here as soon as I do.
I was so pleased when I learned of VENGEANCE’s publication. Thank you so much for all your work. I beseech your fans to read THE SPORTING ROAD. That read equals and or surpasses Steinbeck’s TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY. Thanks again!! You are my favorite author.
It is always a great honor to be considered a reader’s favorite author, so thank you very much for that. It’s funny that you mention TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY because when I wrote my first book, A HUNTER’S ROAD, Steinbeck’s book was much in my mind. I don’t know if you’ve read A HUNTER’S ROAD or not, but if you enjoyed THE SPORTING ROAD, I would encourage you to check it out. I appreciate you taking the time to post your message.
I couldn’t put One Thousand White Women down, and while I prefer paperback over hardback…I couldn’t wait for the paperback version of The Vengeance of Mothers so grabbed the hardback. I visited your site to look for my next good read and became thrilled to see their will be a 3rd in the series! Thank you for sharing your incredible talent!
Thanks for saying that, and thank you for reading my books with such enthusiasm. I hope Vengeance lives up to your expectations. I think the 3rd book, Strongheart will tie up a lot of loose ends for readers, as well as take you into a different world altogether. At the same time, while it will be different, it might also seem hauntingly familiar to you. And who knows, you may even meet some old friends there.
I recently read “One Thousand White Women” practically in one sitting as it was hard to put down. I passed it on to my sister in Wyoming and she has already ordered the second one – I am waiting on one also. So glad to hear there is another coming! And so glad I found you! Thank you!
Thanks, Barb, I’m glad you found me too! I was just recently traveling through Wyoming, a state I know well. I’m happy that 1000WW engaged you and that you passed it along to your sister. Having received very little in the way of national reviews or promotion over the years, the novels’ success has depended almost entirely on word of mouth from readers such as you. I’m very grateful to you for that. I hope you enjoy this next volume of the trilogy!
Do you have any idea how LONG I have waited to find a really good book????? When I happened upon “One Thousand White Women” I was beside myself with joy!! When I was widowed (far too young,I think) I needed good reading to keep my mind off of things. When I stumbled upon your book, I was thrilled! Thank you! Would be proud to shake your hand.
Cheryl, I’m so deeply sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I know what that feels like. Only the passage of time, and the distance it finally offers, can ever provide a kind of eventual sanctuary. And even then, it’s a wound we carry for the rest of our lives, even after it has scarred over. I’m glad you found some solace in my novel. It means a great deal to me to know that.
All best wishes to you,
I have just finished reading One Thousand White Women. My feelings are just that I can not describe them properly. Being part Native American (Cherokee), I was torn between the story told here of the Indians and the Whites. Although I know that this particular story is fiction, these things did happen. I can not wait to read the Vengeance of Mothers. You are truly a Story Teller. My hat is off to you dear sir.
I’m happy that you were moved by my novel, and proud to be called a Story Teller. That has always been my modest goal as a writer–simply to tell a good story and a true story, whether it be fiction or not. I hope you enjoy Vengeance. I very much appreciate you taking the time to post your kind message.
All best wishes,
Just finished reading 1000 White Women and Vengeance of the Mothers. Waiting for Strong heart. Your books are wonderful! I feel that I have stepped into the story and am living it along side the women, seeing with their eyes and feeling with their hearts. You have a wonderful gift of storytelling. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for such a kind post. I’m always happy to hear from satisfied readers, and to know that you were engaged in my books. It’s funny, because as I write them, I, too, feel that I am living the story right along with my characters…which doesn’t make me the best company in the real world. But I’m particularly pleased to know that that sense is also transmitted to a reader. I really appreciate you getting in touch.
OMG! We just started our Book Club, it consists of all newly retired teachers, school psychologist and administration secretary. Our first book was 1000 White Women and we all just loved it. Then we found out about the second book The Vengeance of Mothers, I finished that book last night and stayed with a yearning for one more book. I love your books, you are such a gifted writer. I went on this website hoping to find out more of your books and to my surprise there will be a third book. I can’t wait! I love the stories of all the characters but especially love the story of Molly and Hawk! Thank you so much for the enjoyment of reading these fabulous books.
I’m so glad to hear that your book club enjoyed 1000 White Women, and found The Vengeance of Mothers. I’m also happy to know that you found my website, and are eagerly awaiting the third book of the trilogy. Many thanks for your very kind words about my work. It’s always gratifying to hear from satisfied readers. Just so you know, Molly and Hawk have many adventures yet to come in the next book. I really appreciate you getting in touch. I’m a great admirer of teachers and all those who have devoted their careers to the educational system. That is an exceptionally worthy profession, and you are all unsung, and underpaid heroes in my estimation. I hope you all enjoy your retirement. You deserve it!
Hi, Jim. I just read and loved One Thousand White Women and wrote about it on my blog. Thanks for writing this fine work of historical fiction. I found that it resonates deeply in light of recent events such as #MeToo. Fascinating. Here’s my blog post on Books Can Save a Life. Thanks again. https://wp.me/p28JYl-5ci
Thank you for your very thoughtful and thorough critique of One Thousand White Women on your blog, and for your post here bringing it to my attention. One small correction: the first quote you use on the left of the cover, “We curse…” is actually taken from the second book of the trilogy, The Vengeance of Mothers. I, too, was sickened by the spectacle of angry white men attacking the veracity of Dr. Blasey Ford, who gave such moving, and, clearly truthful testimony in such an utterly brave and dignified manner. You are quite correct, it is disheartening to recognize that our cultural attitudes toward women have not changed nearly as much as they need to. You have a terrific blog, and I’m honored that you included one of my books on it.
I bought One Thousand White Women at the airport in Chicago in September of this year. I have always loved novels about the old west and thought it might be fun to read something like this since my husband and I were headed on a road trip to Cody, Wyoming! Ironically, on our our travels, we passed by many of the places that were mentioned in your book! It was as if the book picked me! Imagine my surprise when I discovered the sequel was already available! (Lucky for me I didn’t discover your book 20 years ago!)
Well I finished The Vengeance of Mother’s and couldn’t put it down! I’m super excited to learn this will be a trilogy and that you are working in the third book as we speak! PLEASE don’t keep us waiting to long!
Thanks for sweet post. Glad to hear that 1000WW is available at the airport in Chicago. I was born there and grew up outside the city. It’s funny that you mention a road trip to Cody. I was up in the Bighorn mountains and the plains country around them this past July, doing some geographical research for the 3rd book. It always inspires me just to spend time in the landscape where my characters live. I made that same drive to Cody to revisit the Buffalo Bill museum. I’m planning to wrap up the final book of the trilogy by the end of the year, and when I have a firm publication date, I’ll post it here on the site. I appreciate your kind words and that you took the time to post them.
I just finished One Thousand White Women after a marathon reading binge. Stayed up a couple of nights well past the 2AM mark – I just could not put it down and will be ordering The Vengeance of Mothers as soon as I send this email. Also will eagerly await news of the publication date for Strongheart and look forward to many more late night/early morning reading sessions. Thank you – 1000WW was a giift to me, one that came from you without your knowledge. On August 23 the center of my life passed away peacefully following his 4 year+ battle against the ravages of dementia. The compelling plot, twists, turns and breathtaking narrative across 493 pages has kept me absorbed, allowing me to escape, even just for a while, into the story and world of May Dodd and her gritty ‘Band of Sisters’. Thank you for this and for what I know will be the same reaction and enjoyment when I receive The Vengeance of Mothers.
I am especially moved by your beautiful post, and the knowledge that my novel offered you some small measure of solace in the loss of your beloved. That is the greatest gift an author can possibly receive from a reader. I faced a similar loss a decade ago after a 3 1/2 year battle against the ravages of cancer, so I have a pretty good sense of the long road of grief ahead of you. I hope that other books can provide you with those same moments of escape.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with me.
All best wishes,
I am an avid reader of historical fiction and a huge fan of yours! I have read One Thousand White Women-TWICE, and sadly, just finished TheVengance of Mothers. (I don’t want your books to end).
I have always been drawn to this part of history and your gift for sharing it with us is amazing. It is quite apparent that you “live” the story you put on the page through exhaustive research. I am very pleased to learn that you have more to share and look forward to the next book.
Thanks again for the sacrifices you make to produce your work! (from a retired Reading/ELA teacher )
All the best to you,
Thank you for your very thoughtful post. I’m gratified to know that you’ve enjoyed my novels. You are quite right in your observation that I “live” my stories, but the research is no great sacrifice for me. In fact, it’s my favorite part of the process. It’s the writing that’s difficult! However, I do live with my characters throughout the research and writing, and I try to immerse myself as completely as possible in their world…which doesn’t always make me very good company in the real world. Writing novels is a rather solitary pursuit, so I’m also pleased to learn that my efforts are sometimes transmitted to the reader.
I admire your former profession, and hope you’re enjoying your retirement.
Thanks for getting it touch.
Dear Mr. Fergus:
I just finished the second book in the One Thousand White Women trilogy. I told my husband, I have to go on this authors web-site and ask him to write another book because when I finished Vengeance, I just wanted more! I am so excited that you are writing a third book. Cannot wait to read it. These are the best books I have ever read! Thank you!
How kind of you to say to say that…high praise, indeed, from a reader! I hope you enjoy the third one, as well.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write me.
Happy holidays to you & your family.
Good evening Mr. Fergus,
I am leading a discussion of One Thousand White Women this Tuesday, can’t wait! Is there anything you would like me to tell our book group about your experience writing the book(s)? Any special messages to them?
Will be starting Mothers Vengeance after the meeting! Can’t wait. Such a range of emotions as I read the first book. (Humor, sadness, despair, frustration, etc.) Have a feeling that will continue in books 2 and 3!
Love your character development; I felt like I could picture each on the of the people in this book. Thank you for that; it does’t happen in every book!
Looking forward to books 2 and 3 (more?).
I can’t really think of any special messages…I just write the books as a means of entertaining myself, and hope someone else likes them. I do appreciate hearing from you, and am glad to know you enjoyed 1000WW, and are reading Vengeance next. I’m still working on the third. I’m going to leave it as a trilogy.
Many thanks for getting in touch. I hope your book club has a lively discussion.
Your writing is just beautiful. I read 1000 White Women a year ago and could not put it down. The history touches me, as the demise of Native American tribes have always broken my heart.
I am currently in the middle of Vengence and am again enthralled. How we could bring such violence to such beautiful people is beyond me. And still many suffer on reservations… Thank you for writing this trilogy and reminding us.
I hope you and your family had a lovely holiday season. Thank you for your very kind words. I’m pleased to know that you’ve enjoyed my novels. I was on the Northern Cheyenne reservation again last winter for a magazine piece i was writing for a French publication. It is always a moving experience for me that elicits a great deal of emotion. One is confronted with the memory of all that these people have lost after having been invaded by us.
Thanks so much for your post.
Can’t wait to read Strongheart !! I just finished reading The Vengeance of Mothers and read One Thousand White Women on a plane heading to Kansas this past summer.
I so enjoy the way you write and the history in your storytelling. I felt like I was right there watching all this unfold !
Thank you for not letting us forget.
I apologize to you and all the other readers who have posted messages on the blog. I am usually informed of those via email by my web host service, but seven messages have come in that I just discovered.
I really appreciate you telling me that you’re enjoying my books. Many thanks for letting me know.
I was so moved by OneThousand White Women and it’s sequel The Revenge of Mothers! They are both so filled with emotions that seem to draw me into the story and make me a part of it. I’ve never before been so attached to characters of a novel and their lives! You have a special gift of creating energy that is so captivating from words on paper! How so terribly lucky I was to find OTWW in a book store in Steamboat Springs!! I can’t wait to read the third book!! Thank you again and again!!
Hello Rita, I’m so happy to hear that you were drawn into my characters’ lives. When I write, I try to immerse myself in their world, to live among them, to hear their voices, and share their experiences. It’s very gratifying to learn that my time with them is somehow transmitted to you as reader. So thank you very much for letting me know. Glad, too, to hear that the bookstore in Steamboat Springs is carrying my books. They’ve always been supportive of my work.
Looking to find out the day for Strongheart?
Love your books and can’t wait!
Strongheart (titled Les Amazones in France) is coming out over there this September, but I’m afraid I don’t have a pub date yet for the American edition. My guess is sometime in the middle of 2020.
I’m sorry to keep you hanging!
Just finished The Vengeance of Mother’s…It was just as moving as 1000 White Women!!! I randomly pick books at the Public Library via their titles…that is where I became acquainted with your stories!! Every page I turned I felt like I was there or was watching a beautifully illustrated movie!! Thank you for the range of emotions felt by a wonderfully written story!! Looking forward to the rest of the story!!
Peace & Love,
Tam Rogers ✌️
So glad to hear you’ve appreciate my novels. The public libraries around the country have been very generous in keeping them on their shelves, and I’m pleased to hear that you discovered my work at yours.
Thanks so much for your very kind words, and for taking the time to write me.
Peace & Love to you,
Any date for when Strongheart comes out?
I’m so sorry I haven’t responded sooner to your posts. As I’ve explained in your previous message, for some reason my website is no longer notifying me of incoming posts, so I was unaware of a number of them over the past month. I’ve been busy working on Strongheart, and have neglected myself to check in on the3 website. As I said, I’m afraid I don’t have a pub date yet for the book. My rough estimate is sometime in the middle of 2020. Sorry I can’t be more precise, but I still working on the manuscript!
I love to read historical fiction and One Thousand Women did not disappoint, if anything it reawakened my love of Native American history. I finished Mother’s Vengeance last night and this morning went in search of the next book in the series. LATE 2019??? Ugh.
In any event, I just purchased ALL of your books and I can’t wait to introduce them to my 9th and 10th grade English classes here in Marinette, Wisconsin!
Thank you bringing history alive and making it more than relevant to today’s readers – my next trip out west will be even richer having read your books.
Wait a second…. 2020??? You’re killin’me Smalls!!
It’s good of you to say, and I always enjoy hearing from educators. I hope your ninth and tenth graders enjoy the books!
I loved One Thousand White Women and The Vengence of Mothers. Cannot wait for your next book. Thanks for the great reads!
Thanks for reading and enjoying them!
I just finished Vengeance of Mothers (after re-reading 1,000 White Women.) I’m confused by the ending – did Molly McGill die? I would so appreciate knowing.
Hi Jackie, I’m afraid I can’t give you a straight answer to that question, because I wasn’t sure myself. The subject is dealt with at greater length in the third book, which I just finished writing, though it won’t be published in the U.S. until next year. Thank you for your post!
I’m thrilled to know that there is yet one more book to savor, as I cannot wait to discover what is in store for your characters. Three days of wonder and now I have to wait for the third book. Thank you for the story and the education. My book club will love it!
Hey Carla, as I mentioned to Cynthia, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait at least a year to read the American edition of Strongheart. American publishers take much longer to get books out than do the French, who can go from manuscript to finished product in a couple of months if necessary. Many thanks for checking in, and for your patience and support of my work.
I just finished “One thousand white women” as other readers I couldn,t put it down.Wonderful book even for an old grandma like me.Made me think of my grandmother in North Dakota who would trade sugar and tobacco with the Indians. She said they were very friendly Indians. Keep up the good work,so interesting.
Thanks Darlene, always a pleasure to hear from readers with ancestral roots in that country. Glad you enjoyed the novel!
Just finished Vengeance — barely an hour ago. What a relief to learn there will be a third book. Is there future sale list I can get on?
Hi Julie, there aren’t any future sale lists, as we don’t even have a official pub date yet. But keep checking back here, and you can also ask your local bookstore as they always get notice of the publication of new titles well in advance. I’ll post something on the blog, as soon as I find out. Many thanks for your interest.
