This is the U.S. title of the third novel of the One Thousand White Women trilogy. Many readers both in the U.S. and France have asked me in emails and posts on this website when it will be published. That is always a hard, maybe impossible question for authors to answer when the actual writing of a book is still in progress. All I can say for certain is that it won’t be 20 years as in the case of The Vengeance of Mothers. Between the delivery of the first draft of the manuscript, the editing process, and the myriad other in-house preparations required by the publisher to print, promote and launch a book, the process can take up to one year in America, though usually only several months in France. I’m shooting for publication in late 2019… but then again, what do I know?

Excited to see you have a title for the third book! As much as me and my book club are looking forward to it, we’ll wait patiently (so many books to read, so little time to read them). Thanks for the update.
I just bought a copy of 1000 White Women at a rummage sale at my church. I couldn’t put it down! I was so sad to finish it, so I came to this web site to learn more about Jim Fergus. I am thrilled to find that this book is the first in a trilogy. I’m going to order The Vengeance of Mothers as soon as I navigate this web site!! Love, love, love the way you write, Mr. Fergus.
That’s very kind of you Mary Lynn, and I hope you also enjoyed The Vengeance of Mothers. Stay tuned for the third book of the trilogy.
I am new to your writing, and already a huge admirer. Anticipating Strongheart, whenever it is published.
Hi Pam, I always enjoy hearing from new readers, especially satisfied ones. Many thanks for taking the time to post your message.
Oh my … I’m so happy to know you aren’t leaving us hanging. I have absolutely loved these 2 books and can’t wait for more. I’m so looking forward to this next chapter. Thank you for all the unforgettable characters!
Hello Jan…no, I will not leave you hanging. The next chapter is underway. Thank you for your kind words.
Mr Fergus your books are amazing! And I just finished The Vengeance of Mothers tonight! And Am thrilled to find its a trilogy! Can’t wait! Thank you!
Hello Beth. Thank you! I’m very pleased to know that you’ve enjoyed the first two novels of the trilogy. The third is not too far away.
I appreciate that you took the time to post on my blog. Jim
Just wanted u to know that our book club loved the first two books of the trilogy and can’t wait for the third. You have such a great gift for writing. Keep it up. A satisfied fan.
Thanks so much for letting me know that. Perhaps because the process of writing novels is such a solitary, internal process, it is sometimes hard for writers even to imagine that anyone reads their books, let alone appreciates them. So it’s always gratifying to hear. Thank you!
This is Lea’s Friend, Carol Morgan. I have just devoured Vengance and can’t wait for Strongheart!!
Hope all is well. Au revoir
Glad to hear it. And thanks for getting in touch!
A friend of mine suggested reading your 1st book 1 thousand White Women, I couldn’t put it down! In fact while reading that one, I went & ordered the 2nd book, and loved it even more, when I got to the last page, I wanted to read more! So I can’t wait for the 3rd book! My friend and I are avid book readers, its our addiction! And I am so glad she introduced me to your books!
Hi Joyce, thank you for your kind post, and thanks to your friend who introduced you to my books. I’m very pleased to know that you enjoyed them, and particularly to hear that you liked Vengeance even more than 1000WW. Sequels are often tricky territory for writers, and for readers, but I like the 2nd more, too. Stay tuned for #3.
Hi, Jim, Just finishing the Vengeance of Mothers, which our book club will be discussing tomorrow. Back in your days in Tubac we were so pleased to be able to have you at our discussion and buy your lunch at the Longhorn in Amado. Seeing that you are north in the summer (wise man as it is 104 plus at 2pm) we won’t be able to throw questions at you this time. Thanks so much for continuing to write!
Hi Nancy, yes, of course, I remember your group and lunch at the Longhorn. That was a while ago! Sorry I’ll miss your book club meeting but happy to answer any questions that come up. Thanks for posting your message!
Cher Monsieur Fergus,
I was so pleased when I learned of VENGEANCE’s publication. Thank you so much for all your work. I beseech your fans to read THE SPORTING ROAD. That read equals and or surpasses Steinbeck’s TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY. Thanks again!! You are my favorite author.
It is always a great honor to be considered a reader’s favorite author, so thank you very much for that. It’s funny that you mention TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY because when I wrote my first book, A HUNTER’S ROAD, Steinbeck’s book was much in my mind. I don’t know if you’ve read A HUNTER’S ROAD or not, but if you enjoyed THE SPORTING ROAD, I would encourage you to check it out. I appreciate you taking the time to post your message.
I couldn’t put One Thousand White Women down, and while I prefer paperback over hardback…I couldn’t wait for the paperback version of The Vengeance of Mothers so grabbed the hardback. I visited your site to look for my next good read and became thrilled to see their will be a 3rd in the series! Thank you for sharing your incredible talent!
Thanks for saying that, and thank you for reading my books with such enthusiasm. I hope Vengeance lives up to your expectations. I think the 3rd book, Strongheart will tie up a lot of loose ends for readers, as well as take you into a different world altogether. At the same time, while it will be different, it might also seem hauntingly familiar to you. And who knows, you may even meet some old friends there.
I recently read “One Thousand White Women” practically in one sitting as it was hard to put down. I passed it on to my sister in Wyoming and she has already ordered the second one – I am waiting on one also. So glad to hear there is another coming! And so glad I found you! Thank you!
Thanks, Barb, I’m glad you found me too! I was just recently traveling through Wyoming, a state I know well. I’m happy that 1000WW engaged you and that you passed it along to your sister. Having received very little in the way of national reviews or promotion over the years, the novels’ success has depended almost entirely on word of mouth from readers such as you. I’m very grateful to you for that. I hope you enjoy this next volume of the trilogy!
Do you have any idea how LONG I have waited to find a really good book????? When I happened upon “One Thousand White Women” I was beside myself with joy!! When I was widowed (far too young,I think) I needed good reading to keep my mind off of things. When I stumbled upon your book, I was thrilled! Thank you! Would be proud to shake your hand.
Cheryl, I’m so deeply sorry to hear of the passing of your husband. I know what that feels like. Only the passage of time, and the distance it finally offers, can ever provide a kind of eventual sanctuary. And even then, it’s a wound we carry for the rest of our lives, even after it has scarred over. I’m glad you found some solace in my novel. It means a great deal to me to know that.
All best wishes to you,
I have just finished reading One Thousand White Women. My feelings are just that I can not describe them properly. Being part Native American (Cherokee), I was torn between the story told here of the Indians and the Whites. Although I know that this particular story is fiction, these things did happen. I can not wait to read the Vengeance of Mothers. You are truly a Story Teller. My hat is off to you dear sir.
I’m happy that you were moved by my novel, and proud to be called a Story Teller. That has always been my modest goal as a writer–simply to tell a good story and a true story, whether it be fiction or not. I hope you enjoy Vengeance. I very much appreciate you taking the time to post your kind message.
All best wishes,
Just finished reading 1000 White Women and Vengeance of the Mothers. Waiting for Strong heart. Your books are wonderful! I feel that I have stepped into the story and am living it along side the women, seeing with their eyes and feeling with their hearts. You have a wonderful gift of storytelling. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for such a kind post. I’m always happy to hear from satisfied readers, and to know that you were engaged in my books. It’s funny, because as I write them, I, too, feel that I am living the story right along with my characters…which doesn’t make me the best company in the real world. But I’m particularly pleased to know that that sense is also transmitted to a reader. I really appreciate you getting in touch.
OMG! We just started our Book Club, it consists of all newly retired teachers, school psychologist and administration secretary. Our first book was 1000 White Women and we all just loved it. Then we found out about the second book The Vengeance of Mothers, I finished that book last night and stayed with a yearning for one more book. I love your books, you are such a gifted writer. I went on this website hoping to find out more of your books and to my surprise there will be a third book. I can’t wait! I love the stories of all the characters but especially love the story of Molly and Hawk! Thank you so much for the enjoyment of reading these fabulous books.
I’m so glad to hear that your book club enjoyed 1000 White Women, and found The Vengeance of Mothers. I’m also happy to know that you found my website, and are eagerly awaiting the third book of the trilogy. Many thanks for your very kind words about my work. It’s always gratifying to hear from satisfied readers. Just so you know, Molly and Hawk have many adventures yet to come in the next book. I really appreciate you getting in touch. I’m a great admirer of teachers and all those who have devoted their careers to the educational system. That is an exceptionally worthy profession, and you are all unsung, and underpaid heroes in my estimation. I hope you all enjoy your retirement. You deserve it!
Hi, Jim. I just read and loved One Thousand White Women and wrote about it on my blog. Thanks for writing this fine work of historical fiction. I found that it resonates deeply in light of recent events such as #MeToo. Fascinating. Here’s my blog post on Books Can Save a Life. Thanks again. https://wp.me/p28JYl-5ci
Thank you for your very thoughtful and thorough critique of One Thousand White Women on your blog, and for your post here bringing it to my attention. One small correction: the first quote you use on the left of the cover, “We curse…” is actually taken from the second book of the trilogy, The Vengeance of Mothers. I, too, was sickened by the spectacle of angry white men attacking the veracity of Dr. Blasey Ford, who gave such moving, and, clearly truthful testimony in such an utterly brave and dignified manner. You are quite correct, it is disheartening to recognize that our cultural attitudes toward women have not changed nearly as much as they need to. You have a terrific blog, and I’m honored that you included one of my books on it.
I bought One Thousand White Women at the airport in Chicago in September of this year. I have always loved novels about the old west and thought it might be fun to read something like this since my husband and I were headed on a road trip to Cody, Wyoming! Ironically, on our our travels, we passed by many of the places that were mentioned in your book! It was as if the book picked me! Imagine my surprise when I discovered the sequel was already available! (Lucky for me I didn’t discover your book 20 years ago!)
Well I finished The Vengeance of Mother’s and couldn’t put it down! I’m super excited to learn this will be a trilogy and that you are working in the third book as we speak! PLEASE don’t keep us waiting to long!
Thanks for sweet post. Glad to hear that 1000WW is available at the airport in Chicago. I was born there and grew up outside the city. It’s funny that you mention a road trip to Cody. I was up in the Bighorn mountains and the plains country around them this past July, doing some geographical research for the 3rd book. It always inspires me just to spend time in the landscape where my characters live. I made that same drive to Cody to revisit the Buffalo Bill museum. I’m planning to wrap up the final book of the trilogy by the end of the year, and when I have a firm publication date, I’ll post it here on the site. I appreciate your kind words and that you took the time to post them.
I just finished One Thousand White Women after a marathon reading binge. Stayed up a couple of nights well past the 2AM mark – I just could not put it down and will be ordering The Vengeance of Mothers as soon as I send this email. Also will eagerly await news of the publication date for Strongheart and look forward to many more late night/early morning reading sessions. Thank you – 1000WW was a giift to me, one that came from you without your knowledge. On August 23 the center of my life passed away peacefully following his 4 year+ battle against the ravages of dementia. The compelling plot, twists, turns and breathtaking narrative across 493 pages has kept me absorbed, allowing me to escape, even just for a while, into the story and world of May Dodd and her gritty ‘Band of Sisters’. Thank you for this and for what I know will be the same reaction and enjoyment when I receive The Vengeance of Mothers.
I am especially moved by your beautiful post, and the knowledge that my novel offered you some small measure of solace in the loss of your beloved. That is the greatest gift an author can possibly receive from a reader. I faced a similar loss a decade ago after a 3 1/2 year battle against the ravages of cancer, so I have a pretty good sense of the long road of grief ahead of you. I hope that other books can provide you with those same moments of escape.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with me.
All best wishes,
I am an avid reader of historical fiction and a huge fan of yours! I have read One Thousand White Women-TWICE, and sadly, just finished TheVengance of Mothers. (I don’t want your books to end).
I have always been drawn to this part of history and your gift for sharing it with us is amazing. It is quite apparent that you “live” the story you put on the page through exhaustive research. I am very pleased to learn that you have more to share and look forward to the next book.
Thanks again for the sacrifices you make to produce your work! (from a retired Reading/ELA teacher )
All the best to you,
Thank you for your very thoughtful post. I’m gratified to know that you’ve enjoyed my novels. You are quite right in your observation that I “live” my stories, but the research is no great sacrifice for me. In fact, it’s my favorite part of the process. It’s the writing that’s difficult! However, I do live with my characters throughout the research and writing, and I try to immerse myself as completely as possible in their world…which doesn’t always make me very good company in the real world. Writing novels is a rather solitary pursuit, so I’m also pleased to learn that my efforts are sometimes transmitted to the reader.
I admire your former profession, and hope you’re enjoying your retirement.
Thanks for getting it touch.
