THE VENGEANCE OF MOTHERS special Skype offer to book clubs

Posted on January 27, 2018

My new year’s resolution for 2018, is to monitor and update my website on at least a weekly basis.

Also, I would like to offer phone or Skype chats to all book clubs who choose The Vengeance of Mothers (the second volume of the One Thousand White Women trilogy) as a selection. I can be contacted via the link at the bottom of all pages of this website. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your support of my work.

I just finished reading The Vengeance of Mothers. I really enjoyed reading it. I loved the first novel one thousand white women and was glad to have the story continued. I hope there will be a third book so that the story can be continued. I didn’t want the book to end.

Ah je vais devoir écrire en français . Sorry !

Bises,
Jim

Jim,
I only recently came across One Thousand White Women, which I devoured, and then was fortunate enough to immediately be able to read Vengeance of Mothers. Unfortunately I finished that just yesterday and I did not want it to end. Both books will certainly stick with me, and opened a deep interest in Native American culture and history in this country.

Thank you for writing about such strong women. It seems like so many themes regarding the US gov’t in your novels of that time period are very similar to current day issues. The female characters are a breath of fresh air, and we need them even more so today.

Cannot wait for the third installment, and hopefully news on a miniseries of some sort.

All the best,
Maggie

Hello Maggie,
I’m pleased to hear that you read and enjoyed both books. I first published One Thousand White Women 20 years ago, well before this current powerful and long overdo surge in women’s issues–equality in pay, equal representation in society, politics, the arts and the workplace, the MeToo movement, etc.–all of which, in my modest way, I have tried to present through my female characters. We seem to be in the midst of a major cultural tidal wave, and one that men should also welcome, though some must inevitably get out of its way. I think it’s all wonderful.

As to a miniseries, we’ve had many inquiries about and options of the film rights over the years, but so far it hasn’t happened. We currently have a new production team working on it, for which I have high hopes. But my job is just to write the books.

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

All best,
Jim

Most of our book club enjoyed Vengeance, but not as much as its prequel. Without knowing, I said it must be part of a trilogy! I’m so glad it is. We came up with a possible ending for your third book, and I would love to share it with you!

Jim Fergus says: March 2, 2018 at 11:47 am

Hi Janet,
I avoided writing a sequel to 1000WW for 17 years before I started working on Vengeance, and for exactly the reason you mention:
Sequels to popular novels are almost never as good as, or at least, perceived by readers to be as good as the original. Then again, reading is a subjective, personal process, and at the same time others have told me that they considered Vengeance a better book. I listen to my readers and always value their feedback, but I’ve never tried to write to them. That would be an impossible task. All we writers can do is try to write the best books we can, knowing that the chips will fall as they will. As to your idea for an ending to the third novel, I must say that I’ve never had a book club suggest such a thing, but I would certainly be curious to hear about it. That said, an ending to the next book must be based on the several hundred pages that precede it, so your club must already have some preconceived notions of where it’s headed. You can send your idea to my email link on the bottom right of each page of the website “email Jim Fergus.” I look forward to hearing from you!
All best,
Jim

I am wondering where and how Hawk and Molly will put down tomahawks and grieving to get it on?
Loved especially the strategy you used to bring Molly to the feeling of hopefulness for the future….in the warmth of another touch(shoulder to shoulder with Hawk,Mouse touching Molly’s hair and the disguise of Jules. And finally the knowing the difference between wanting NOTHING and wanting MORE.
Reading through the lines I assume somewhere in France, someone has made you hopeful in the future. I have now replaced C.McCarty’s cowboys for J.Fergus’s Indians, greenhorns, characters that stare in silence.
I don’t have a Dapple to ride nor trance-like expression but find myself singing AM cancan songs all the time, Happy to be Alive…..can’t wait for the next great awakening…from you. As a scientist and wanta be cowgirl.
Warmest regards, Caroline Schirmer

Hello Caroline. Haha! thank you, what a terrific post…made me laugh.
Didn’t Hawk & Molly already get it on?
Working on the third book now.
Scientists are much under siege these days by our current administration, so bravo to you for your efforts in whatever field you are in.
Don’t give up that cowgirl dream.
Thank you for reading & appreciating my books.

Hello to my new Favorite Author!

I happened upon One Thousand White Women by accident – my sister actually found it and thought it was something I would enjoy. I am a reader of epic proportions and love nothing than a story that grabs me from the first sentence, wrings every emotion out of me throughout, and leaves me wanting still more at the end. What a riveting novel you have gifted us with! I intend to re-read it again one day, anticipating as much joy and sorrow as I did with the first read. And now, on to your next one…all the other books on my shelf will just have to wait!

And I do think this would make an excellent movie.

Hello Marge, my new Favorite Reader!
So happy to hear that OTWW engaged you. There is nothing I love more than enthusiastic readers…without you, I wouldn’t have a job.
I hope the next one pleases you as well.
I’m presently working on the third book of the trilogy.
Thank you for taking to make such a lovely post.
All best,

Hello Jim,
My sister suggested I would like reading OTWW, but I have to admit that when she gave a synapses of the book ,I wasn’t too interested. I finally did download it to my kindle and eventually started reading it. For someone like me who has little interest in history, I was pleasantly surprised. It was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I didn’t want to put it down, what an exceptional book. I’m so looking forward to reading the sequel, I’ll be downloading it tonight. The thought of the possibility of watching it in the movies, I can’t wait! Thank you for your great work, please don’t stop.
Your new fan.

Hey SaraAnne,
Thank you so much for your terrific post. I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed the novel…even though you thought you wouldn’t! “One of the best books I’ve ever read” is a tremendously gratifying thing for an author to hear from a reader. It’s funny because in general my novels don’t get much attention in terms of critical reviews in national newspapers or magazines, but after 20 years in print, OTWW has now sold over a million copies, all simply by word of mouth–just as you heard about it from your sister. So my thanks to her, and to you!
All best,
Jim

Just finished “The Vengeance of Mothers” as my book club is discussing it this Wednesday. We read “One Thousand White Women” several years ago, and i suggested reading “Vengeance” as I saw it was a sequel. We loved the first novel, and already a couple of members mentioned it was hard to put down and it was really good. All I can say is wow, what a great book and that I’m eagerly awaiting the third (when it comes out).

Hi Cindy,
I hope your book club has a lively discussion on Wednesday. The women’s book clubs have been very generous in their support of my work, and I greatly appreciate that. I’d be happy to join you for a Skype, but it always changes the texture of the discussion when the author is in the room. But we could make it short, and then I’ll sign off and let everyone say what they really feel about the book!
Thanks for your kind words.

Hello Mr. Fergus,
I picked up One Thousand White Women on the bargain shelf at Tattered Cover here in Colorado. What a lucky find! I am presenting it to my book club for a possible “next read”. If chosen, I would love to be able to skype with you during the discussion. ( Which would be Friday May 4,2018 7:30 PM (Central Time Zone). Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Heather,
I stopped doing Skype chats about One Thousand White Women a number of years ago. I had so many requests and it began to take up too much of my time. Also, I got a little tired of answering the same questions! I made this temporary Skype offer specifically as a way of introducing The Vengeance of Mothers, the second volume of the trilogy, to reading groups, many of which have already read OTWW. Also, I was curious to know how the new novel, was being received by book clubs. All of which to say, if your club ever gets around to reading Vengeance, I would be delighted to chat with you about it.
I do very much appreciate your interest in my work.
Best regards,
Jim

First let me start by thanking you for creating such a wonderful story. I devoured both books in a little under a week. The way you make the characters come alive and grab the reader is such an incredible gift. i simply cannot wait to continue reading when you release your third book to the series.

Hi Kate,
Thank you so much for your post. It is always gratifying to hear from readers who are moved by my books. I’ve never really been able to imagine my reader, as the appreciation of any book is such a subjective matter. I simply try to write the kind of novel that I like to read, with lively characters and a brisk plot line. I hope you’ll enjoy the third volume of the trilogy!

I just submitted an email to you regarding and upcoming book club meeting and afterwards found this site on which to write: Please answer for verifying discussion: Was there a meeting of Indian Chiefs with Grant asking for white brides? Was there an individual on whom you based the character May Dodd? The supporting “brides” could have been heroines as well! Was the March 1, 1876 massacre a real raid? I have purchased The Wild Girl, and The Vengeance of Mothers! I know these books will “cling to me” as May Dodd’s story has done so. Thank you for your response.

Jim Fergus says: May 6, 2018 at 11:18 am

Hi Erskine, the answer to your first question can be found in the Author’s Note at the beginning of the print edition of One Thousand White Women, and at the end of the digital edition. I didn’t base the character May Dodd on anyone in particular. The McKenzie massacre you mention did take place as described. However, for various fictional reasons, I changed the date, which I now kind of regret. I’m glad you found the other novels, and I very much appreciate your interest in my work. Thanks for getting in touch.

Just finished The Vengeance of Mothers last night and am thrilled with the ending, not sad as I had expected, and am delighted to learn there is a third book.
I am struck (positively) with your treatment of women and am curious about your models. Your characters seem both genuine and lovable

Hi Peggy, sorry to be slow getting to your post. I’m glad you enjoyed the ending. Although few native American stories of that tragic period in our history have happy endings, and given everything else that is going on these days in America and around the world, I couldn’t bear to write a depressing ending… after all, one must keep ones hopes up, which is what my characters try to do. I don’t really have any models in mind when I start writing them, they just seem to take on a life of their own on the page. I’m happy to hear that you find them genuine and lovable…so do I!

Hello Jim,
I was today in France at the airport looking for some souvenirs then I turned on myself and my eyes captured the book La vengeance des mères I bought it! I’m sure that this is a book written for me…I ve seen there is no translation into italian… would you me do that for you? I will find the right moment to begin it but I know I will then read also the next one – that is prior- thank you for your attention! Nadia

Salut Nadia,
Je suis content que tu as trouvé La vengeance à l’aéroport. On n’a pas encore vendu les droits étrangers en Italie, mais peut-être ça va arriver… et puis on aura besoin d’une bonne traductice. However, you should read the original English edition of both books.
Merci de m’avoir écrit.
